This is part of a monthly series in which we get to know Sifties.

Sameer Jauhar is a Business Development Representative who has been with Sift Science for 10 months. If he could eat just one food for the rest of his life, it would be his mother’s parathas. They remind him of his childhood, waking up and heading downstairs to the breakfast table while his mother made him one after another after another.

What three traits define you?

  • Intense, but in the right moments, like when I’m trying to accomplish a goal, have my mind set on something, or am focused on addressing problems. But I like to be silly and relaxed at home.
  • Grateful. I was born in the U.S. but that wouldn’t have happened without my parents’ decision to come here. If they hadn’t, I may be living a more difficult life elsewhere. I’ve always had a roof over my head and food on the table. In college I was part of a volunteer group called Spartans Rebuilding Michigan and will be joining Sift Cares for their next event.
  • Empathetic. I was always that way growing up, and wanted to understand people’s points of view on things, which maps well onto my current role. I have to listen to and address a client’s problems to help move them forward.

Where is your favorite place to be?

Walking out of the gym. It means I either woke up super early before work and will have some quiet time at the office, or I’m focusing on something outside of work. I feel like I can get too sucked into work and need some time to take care of myself.

Do you speak another language?

No, but I’m slowly understanding and learning how to speak Hindi. I’m picking up phrases from my brother and sister-in-law (she also speaks Urdu). When I was younger I was embarrassed to learn another language, but since moving to the Bay Area I’m more open to embracing my culture.

Where were you born?

Michigan – people in San Francisco have a misconception that Midwesterners are gritty, so I use it to my advantage. I had a great time growing up there and had great friends and neighbors. I would love to have a summer cottage there one day.

I heard some great music coming from your headphones when I used to sit next to you. Who are some of your favorite artists?

I have a broad list of artists that I listen to. I was really into rap and hip-hop growing up, including Eminem and Tupac. When I was in high school my brother introduced me to EDM, and recently I’ve been into chill tunes, like music from John Mayer. I like a lot of random stuff all over the map.
